Job threat in North QueenslandTrack maintenance gangs in the North Queensland towns of Ayr, Bowen and Collinsville could lose seven jobs, following the upgrading of the track in those areas, but the Rail Tram & Bus Union is fighting to save the jobs. The track between Rockhampton and Townsville was upgraded for the proposed high speed tilt train service. The upgrade is about to commence on the Townsville - Cairns section of the track. RTBU Organiser Les Moffitt argues that freight trains increased their speed to 100 kilometres per hour in most sections of the track, and increased their axle loadings, once the track was upgraded. "These are the productivity increases achieved through the upgrading programs, however management's view on productivity enhancement seems to be to reduce staff levels," said Less Moffitt. The union argues that coal tonnages on the line have more than doubled to 12.2 million tonnes over the last eight years, and that maintenance has to be enhanced. Track maintenance jobs in North Queensland will be an issue on the March 26 ITF International Railway Workers Action Day. |
